Hi all,
Just a short note to say to you that my wife and I have just got back from two wonderful days in London.
We caught the 8.50am train out to arrive at Liverpool st station 1hr 20mins later and walked (me in my wheelchair) from Liverpool st station to Tower Bridge/ Tower of London then keeping on the same side of the river walked all the way to Westminster Bridge/ Houses of Parliament.
Then off to Buckingham Palace ( we were of course taking snap shots all the way). We then made our way down Birdcage Walk (at this time of year it is very pretty), then went through Hyde Park, fantastic open area in the middle of London.
Then along the stretch of water called the Serpentine and out in the middle of the park to Sussex Gardens where the Hotel was sited. Checked in and looked over the first floor room (via lift), well the room was very difficult to get to with tight corridoors turning left and right ( when we booked the room they knew I was bringing a wheelchair) after asking for a different room at reception the gave us the perfect room, ground floor and easy to get to.
We then after freshening up caught a Taxi to the Theatre to watch Phantom of the Opera, my wife has wanted to see this show for a long time, the young man at the ticket office took us to a side door (no steps) and handed us on to a very helpful Carl who took us to our seats where I transfered from my wheelchair to a seat, he said he would be at our call when ever needed, I thought I would fall asleep but I didn't it was quite the reverse, I enjoyed every scene, I dont mind admitting , I even had a tear in my eyes at one time.....I thouroughly enjoyed the Phantom of the Opera and would recommend it, (p.s. got the tickets cheap as well on the net, disabled reduced rate and carer.)
After the show we caught a Taxi back to the Hotel to spend the night.
The next day after breakfast we checked out of the hotel and walked again through Hyde Park over Westmintster Bridge to the London Eye and went on what they call a flight (again reduced disabled rate, carer free) if you have not been on this attraction yet I again recommend it, great views and high......
On finishing this we then had a boat trip downto tower bridge an back to the Eye, this was fantastic, they even had a ramp for wheelchairs on getting off the boat we then got something to eat.
Then walked down this side of the Thames (opposite to yesterday) to London Bridge, very easy walkways.
As we were getting a bit short of time we caught a Taxi to Liverpool st station and caught the 4.08 train out back to Clacton.
I'm glad we took the opportunity to do this trip, this is the second such trip to London, the first trip was again over two days staying at the same hotel and the show we saw was Saturday Night Fever.
Would recommend this to you all and the people in London are all so friendly and move out of the way being I'm in a wheelchair not like the people in Colchester who seem to make a point in not moving as if you should not be there.( note.. not every body )
PPS. dont foget to take a camera with you.
My moto is Have Wheelchair will Travel
Do it while you can
